A nod to the great John Oswald and his ‘Plunderphonics’ (here represented in a slightly more ‘chunky’ form). A ‘by key byte tour’ through Mr. (J)oel’s greatest errr…bytes? (no worries Bill, I love you just the way I edited you )

At this point, these are my ‘first pass’ versions and I will probably do some further ‘cleaning’. As each original file provided here in 7:00 min excerpts was over 20 minutes (being that my original manifesto was to use EVERY byte of original songs) I needed a break for now!

Billy Bytes Player

Audio photocollage in the vein of David Hockney’s ‘joiners’.  A joiner consists of a series of photographs taken from different viewpoints, arranged (overlapping) to form a single piece. By taking the pictures from carefully selected viewpoints, and arranging them in the right way, Hockney was able to change the apparent shape of space and introduce the element of time into the work.

Here, layered time, space, and narrative is attempted through a mathematical presentation of ‘chunks’ and layers of sound bytes in a vein related to Cubist concerns. The challenge is then of two ears (as opposed to two eyes in Cubist theory) in slightly different moments of time.

The above image is probably the most well known of Hockney’s ‘Joiners; and in a bit of fate happens to been created only miles from where I presently live!
