“In mathematics, especially in geometry and topology, an ambient space is the space surrounding a mathematical object. For example, a line may be studied in isolation, or it may be studied as an object in two-dimensional space — in which case the ambient space is the plane, or as an object in three-dimensional space — in which case the ambient space is three-dimensional. To see why this makes a difference, consider the statement “Lines that never meet are necessarily parallel.” This is true if the ambient space is two-dimensional, but false if the ambient space is three-dimensional, because in the latter case the lines could be skew lines, rather than parallel.”

Loop Scanning – the slow forward movement of a short loop progressing through a longer audio file with a subtle effect not unlike the transformational metamorphosis of Steve Reich’s ‘It’s Gonna Rain’, which is, technically speaking, the altogether different implementation of two loops played at slightly different speeds and the offset ‘difference’ between them producing the final result. Conceptually though, a similar ‘mono’ version of the mood ‘It’s Gonna Rain’ creates is realized with the scanning technique.

Working somewhere between the ‘broken’ media aesthetics of Christian Marclay and William Basinski’s ‘Disintegration Loops’ with a big ‘tip of the hat’ to Jan Jelinek’s work, I present here some initial ‘loop scanning’ experiments as a test of concept and initial ‘probe’ as to source material suitability and settings. These are the more ambient-leaning experiments, an earlier rhythmic exploratory session still awaits some post production after which I will also post.

Prototyping the concept in several discreet applications running on the Mac desktop (until I can get a proper ‘loop scanner’ module built in software such as Kyma or Reaktor), I did this evening’s work using Roni Music’s ‘Amazing Slow Downer’, triggering it’s ‘frames’ (equaling a 1/75th of a second increment per trigger) via a seperate MIDI trigger (‘Rondo’). As both a polyrhythmic ‘master’ meter and camouflage to unintended glitches (as oppossed to the intended ones also present) several ‘vinyl simulation’ methods were then introduced into the live chain, either before or after a final ‘patina’ of guitar amplification/fx simulation to properly antique the overall mood. Each performance was captured live via Rogue Amoeba’s ‘Audio Hijack Pro’.

*Best experienced ‘indirectly’, in other words attentions directed elsewhere with track played in background.

More sketches (duos), again playing with my own? ‘intervalic bpm’ theory. This ‘system’ allows a free combination of rhythms derived from the same ratios as a C Chromatic scale.

Also in use here is the intentional margin of error introduced by ‘AI’ key identification software (made for dj’s and popular dance music) when used with more avant garde based sounds. This matches up (again duets in this case) material that is of different scales and keys by their ‘common’ tones as identified by the software for a ‘different sameness’ than what would be derived by more traditional tonal analysis, allowing the occasional rogue vertical relationship to appear in somewhat sinister moments of key ambiguity.

Diesel Punk Rhythm Bytes

The factory inside my laptop, rhythm tracks ultimately destined for a conceptual ‘diesel pulp jam’ (as yet realized). Each ‘trio trap set’ rhythm represented by long, medium, and close-up mic-shots.

Rhythms derived by the juxtaposition of ‘chromatic scale bpm’s', that is, BPM’s conforming to the same intervalic ratios found in a C chromatic scale. The layering (here in a ‘trio’ configuration’) is then imaginarily ‘spot-mic’d’ via a set of surgical resonant eq’s designed to spectrally isolate each layer from one another, setting it apart wih no overlapping of frequencies to it’s neighbors (3D EQ?). These eq.s are ‘rotated’ into three different positions per trio to create ’long’,’ medium,’ and ‘close-ups’ (and/or X,Y, and Z) view aspects of individual performances.

Ideally, a sonic impression is suggested of the machinations of some ‘science fiction noir’ factory and it’s alien mechanicals of unknown purpose chugging, gulping, gurgling, ripping, clanking…(you get the picture) away.

Again, playing in the ‘faux nostalgia’ realm of my early days of instruments, machines, and cassette recorders. The ‘scene’ is a small bedroom in 1979, amid the chaos of tolex-covered furniture-amplifiers and a carpet of cables and upon a leaky waterbed I sit with my newly acquired drum machine (varied per ‘fantasy’) and a cassette recorder (the portable kind with ‘built-in mic). This scenario does actually exist as recordings but I like this ‘simulcrum’ version better…rewriting personal history is today my laptop prerogative :-)

More than often, the manner in which I work involves ‘prototyping’ of a set and predetermined number of tracks…that is I ‘assemble’ discreet tracks in a very experimental and freeform fashion to layer up possible ‘compounds’ for future reference. Importantly though, each track itself has some particular ‘experimental’ and ‘designed-in’ aspect in the conceptual model, the trick then being the successful (or at least interesting) combination with others.

Here is such as two live sessions (configured as ‘trios’) and pretty much as recorded (no edits) via DJ equipment for an impromptu ’meeting’ of the tracks/playlists for first time.

Technical notes:

This last second(s) was ‘framed and scoped’ using ‘Jambient’ and ‘Plasma’ ensemble variations to create initial tapestry. Then these ‘weaves’ were plied and stretched as ‘duos’ and trios’, the ensembles (musically speaking) developed and configured as ‘valid groupings’ per their multiples of time and pitch ranges of regular? instrumental combos choices…spectrally speaking.

Audio photocollage in the vein of David Hockney’s ‘joiners’. A joiner consists of a series of photographs taken from different viewpoints, arranged (overlapping) to form a single piece. By taking the pictures from carefully selected viewpoints, and arranging them in the right way, Hockney was able to change the apparent shape of space and introduce the element of time into the work.

Here, layered time, space, and narrative is attempted through a mathematical presentation of ‘chunks’ and layers of sound bytes in a vein related to Cubist concerns. The challenge is then of two ears (as opposed to two eyes in Cubist theory) in slightly different moments of time.

“The words wabi and sabi do not translate easily. Wabi originally referred to the loneliness of living in nature, remote from society; sabi meant “chill”, “lean” or “withered”. Around the 14th century these meanings began to change, taking on more positive connotations.[1] Wabi now connotes rustic simplicity, freshness or quietness, and can be applied to both natural and human-made objects, or understated elegance. It can also refer to quirks and anomalies arising from the process of construction, which add uniqueness and elegance to the object. Sabi is beauty or serenity that comes with age, when the life of the object and its impermanence are evidenced in its patina and wear, or in any visible repairs.

When you are after that innermost ‘self’, the person you become AFTER playing in the dark for hours and running out of practiced ‘riffs’, then you are practicing what is yours uniquely, self expression; thus, art. When your intention is to try to find a common, universal link and emotion between yourself and some unknown and unquantifiable ‘audience’ (thus ‘generalising’ the ‘signs’ of music to appeal towards more known quantities based on particular characteristics) then you are attempting entertainment/communication. Entertainment (a subset of communication) depends on cliche (familiarity), redundancy, and previously agreed upon ‘rules’ to convey ‘messages’…not exactly a ‘hotbed’ for creative innovations

I see no problem with either, as long as YOU know which one you are practicing. I continue to enjoy both with that perspective (as segregated). Taken from one of my live ‘avant garde mash-up’ performances I have described elsewhere dated 110606. A board mix ‘trio’ of three different but simultaneous and continously changing performances (playlists) by my fav’s in this genre. My ‘take’ on the idea of Zappa’s ‘Strange Synchronization’ or ‘Weird Xenocrony‘ (Zappa coined the phrase ”xenocrony,” which was the merging of music from two different sources to create a new, third piece)

If I may quote myself from another forum for reference to this ‘technique’:

‘I meant to answer your question-that set up I describe is one possible configuration of what I call the ‘Metaphysical Multitrack’. it is a variation on Zappa’s ‘xenocrony’, Jeff Noone’s ‘Cobralingus Engine/Metamorphiction Process’ and the overall traditions of collage, bricolage, culture jamming, turntablism, etc (=Audiolage?), to create live, unique performances from concrete sources.

I produce ‘solo’ tracks of my own creation in different catagories (Rhythmic, Texture, Nature/Organic, Historical, Narrative, Solos, Antiqued, etc), completely in isolation from each other but with key/tempo strategies that allow them to be randomly combined with a certain amount of mindfulness. These are then loaded up in various ‘players’ (unlocked from any clock or grid) and freely combined in realtime with other performer’s material. ‘Borrowed’ sources are also added, so there is a mix of original and non-original material. Captured time as source unit/sample for oscillations. Frozen moments made to unfold over time, a snapshot (polaroid) becomes aural environment. Initial idea concieved as an sonic analogy to the idea of the ‘Mona Lisa’ made of thousands of ‘Mona Lisa’s', now called a ‘Mosaic’ portrait/picture.

My ‘Sonic Fictions’, sketches and miscellaneous ideas, concepts, tracks in progress. An aural semi-daily journal of recording arcana and artifacts.

I am posting my various activities as I create them to see who (if anyone) might be interested in some creative trade/play as in file exchange/dubs?

One of my basic premises is one from theatre/movies, that of ‘Three Actors’. The idea that the human mind is ideally engaged with any three things at a time on a given ‘stage’ informs everything from photography, to animation, to pop mixes.

I have consciously created many of my tracks over the last years with up to two ‘actors’ present, anticipating either my own removal from the process for the third part or, at least, the seeming removal from ‘self’ by ‘time passed’. This, then becomes an ‘open mic’ session if there are those inclined.

Various keyboards, bass, guitar, beat manipulations, laptop dsp, composition, recording, mixes, and most art by Loopy C (Chris R. Gibson) unless otherwise noted (mash-ups, sound design contributions, etc.)

PLAYER INSTRUCTIONS

Clicking on the link ‘Player’ in individual posts will allow you to select playlists and/or tracks.

-The > before a list name in the player is a track (click to play if it doesn’t start up immediately).
-The + before a list name in the player is an individual complete playlist, click to open playlist and then click the first track in list that appears to begin.

Some playlists do require some time to load! depending on your connection speed so allow for this or you can use the ‘down arrow’ following each track’s name to directly download to your hard drive. All files are 320 kbps mp3′s.

Additional ‘Help’ can be found on the player itself via ‘hovering’ over a control.

Many ‘Players’ operate in an ‘endless playlist’ mode, that is to say they are filled with more tracks than a average listening session and shuffled upon each page refresh so as to make each visit to that player a ‘new’ experience in material and sequence (mimicking the ‘randomness’ of tuning into an unknown radio show on some late night road trip, at least for me).
